INCENTIVE:

This is a bit of a two parter. Curtis would ask, if it's not too big of a request, for his boon to be the end of global warming back in 2014. The temperatures around the world were at unmanageable levels, so scientists created CW7 - a coolant - and released it into the upper layers of the atmosphere. This coolant succeeded in bringing down temps, but caused them to keep dropping. After that, the world began to freeze over at a rapid pace.

This led to the creation of the Snowpiercer, and seventeen of the worst years any of the passengers on the tail end of the train had ever lived, Curtis included. If the global warming problem had been solved, the rest wouldn't have happened. If this request is too big, he'd ask for Edgar to survive since he deserved a chance at a better life.

FIT:

Upon entering Eudio, Curtis would need a period of adjustment. Life in a city, with little to no trouble for those living there, is going to be a big change for him. He comes from a place where the people are starved, forced to work, given no privacy and allowed little freedoms. It'll take some time but he's patient, very patient, and he'll give the place some time to grow on him.

In exchange for the incentive, he'll do what is asked of him without any disagreement and little fuss. He doesn't try to start trouble, though it usually finds him, which makes him a good fit for a place that doesn't actually want to hurt the people living in it. He'll work hard so that he can stay and have his incentive granted.

As for hangups, sexually and romantically he's open minded, but he has had little opportunity for sex or romance while on the Snowpiercer. He was a teenager at the end of 2014 and had experienced growing up when it was more acceptable to have whatever partners he might prefer. However, privacy was nonexistent on the Snowpiercer so anything that did happen was fast and leaned more towards satisfying base needs, rather than something romantic. It'll be easier for him to have sex with someone over cuddling or holding hands, but he'll try to work on that during his stay.

CONSENT:

Understanding consent has never been a problem for Curtis. He knows the difference between what's wrong and what's right, but he's not always been strong enough to do what's right. When he first boarded the train, he was young, inexperienced, and impulsive; Curtis hurt people in order to survive. He wasn't strong enough to make the right choice, so he followed the easy path, and only did what was best for himself.

He took what wasn't his and he did it violently and with little regard to how it effected anyone else. Not long after boarding, he met a man who showed him that his way of living wasn't the only way, and Curtis has spent the last seventeen years trying to make up for what he'd done. He carries a lot of guilt, knows that he's not a good man, but he wants to be. More than anything, he wants to do what's right. Curtis not only understands consent, but over time he's grown and changed and is no longer the kind of person that would take without having permission first.

Curtis is an average human. He is typically pretty strong, but lack of a good diet have him exhausted quicker than most. He is a good fighter, ruthless and determined, and is handy with an ax. He's a good leader when he puts his mind to it, is clever, and stays calm in extremely intense situations.

For Mod consideration: At the end of the film, he loses from his forearm down. If possible, I'd like him to come in with it somehow fixed.

Personality:

"We go forward."

As the newest chosen leader of the tail end revolution, Curtis struggles to accept the role that has been forced on him. The tail enders require hope to survive and a strong, steadfast person to guide them along the right path, and it's a position that he could be capable of handling if it weren't for how little he thinks of himself. A lack of conviction in his own good qualities, the inability to look past his own history, and guilt make it difficult for Curtis to take the mantle of leader. He, at the very same time that he wants to deny this role, can't abide the way his people are being treated. He knows that they all deserve more than what they're getting, and for the longest time, he believes that there are better men than him to take them to the front of the train and give them that better life.

Atonement, in every meaning of the word, is something that Curtis continuously strives to achieve.

"You ever been to the tail section? Do you have any idea what went on back there? When we boarded? It was chaos. Yeah, we didn't freeze to death, but we didn't have time to be thankful. Wilford's soldiers came and they took everything. A thousand people in an iron box. No food, no water... After a month, we ate the weak... You know what I hate about myself? I know what people taste like. I know that babies taste best... There was a woman. She was hiding with her baby. And some men with knives came. They killed her and they took her baby. And then an old man-no relation, just an old man-stepped forward and he said, "Give me the knife." And everyone thought he'd kill the baby himself. But he took the knife and he cut off his arm. And he said, "Eat this, if you're so hungry. Eat this, just leave the baby." I had never seen anything like that. And the men put down their knives... You've probably guessed who that old man was. That baby was Edgar. And I was the man with the knife. I killed Edgar's mother... And then one by one, other people in the tail section started cutting off arms and legs and offering them. It was like a miracle. And I wanted to. I tried, it's... A month later, Wilford's soldiers brought those protein blocks. We've been eatin' that shit ever since. 18 years I've hated Wilford. 18 years I've waited for this moment. And now I'm here... Open the gate. Please."

His past actions, crimes he committed as a teenager when he first boarded the train, are a main motivator behind the decisions that he makes. In an attempt to atone for those atrocities, he assists in the creation of a revolution meant to free the tail enders of their servitude and harsh living conditions.

Years ago, all sections of the train were closed off and everyone at the end had all food taken away from them. Starving, the instinct to survive took over and Curtis bowed beneath the weight of those base needs, becoming someone that could not only kill another person for food, but could do it again and again if needed. When an old man comes forward, sacrificing his own limbs to stop Curtis and the others from killing anyone else, he is laid low by the enormity of such a gesture. He's never seen anything like that before. He attempts to do the same, badly scarring his own forearm, but isn't able to go through with it no matter how much he wants to be the kind of man that could. Guilt from both being a 'monster' and too weak to even follow through with a slight repayment for his actions shape him into a man that is eventually strong enough to stand up for what's right. He spends the next seventeen years being mentored by that same old man who teaches him how to overcome his own shortcomings and to grow into a person that can do what's right even if it's not the easiest route a person can take.

It takes a strong person to admit to the things they've done, and Curtis isn't that kind of person, even if he wants to be. He spends his days with Edgar by his side, knowing that he killed the boy's mother, and would have killed him too if he hadn't been stopped. Curtis tries to make up for it by taking care of the other man and by being a good friend, but the guilt is overwhelming and he's adamant about how much he's not a hero to be worshiped whenever Edgar tries to do just that. He doesn't want praise and thanks because he doesn't think he deserves any of it, not from anybody, and definitely not from Edgar.

To show that he's finally committed to the cause, and ready to lead, he proves that the guards are out of bullets by putting a gun to his forehead and forcing them to pull the trigger. He'd willingly accepted that he might die then, a sacrifice that he would make even if it still wouldn't be enough to make up for what he's done. He fights ruthlessly, and can make difficult decisions on the spot. Curtis puts the well-being of others over himself now, getting his group to the front of the train so that they can try to make a better life for themselves. He's adaptable, calm, and incisive, all qualities that assist him in being a good leader and that balance out his flaws.

Coming full circle, Curtis is able to make a personal sacrifice that would benefit the other people living with him, where years ago he didn't have the strength to carry it through. It comes down to him or someone else and he's relieved, and pleased, to realize that he's finally capable of picking the other person over himself. His desire to be someone that could be selfless is strong and through years of hardship and growth, Curtis finally becomes the man he's always wanted to be. Not perfect, never that, but someone that can do the right thing.

→ Guilt: A heavy weight and a motivator for future choices, Curtis' guilt over his history influences the way he reacts to situations. He's in a constant state of trying to do what is right.
→ PTSD: Having gone through watching the world end, starvation, extreme temperature changes, abuse, cannibalism, loss of hope, and more, Curtis' PTSD levels are through the roof.
→ Blunt: Friend or foe, Curtis isn't afraid to be honest and tell you exactly what you don't want to hear.

Turns out starting a revolution and coming back from the dead is a whole fucking lot easier than acclimating to civil living in Eudio, if you would call it civil.

The first time he stumbles across a store, he stands in the middle of the doorway in awe until someone tells him to move his ass. He can't remember the last time he's seen that much food in one place. Fuck, he can't even remember what a steak tastes like, and he sure as hell doesn't know the names of everything on the shelves. Part of him knows that's because this place is strange, but the rest of it is on him. There's a disconnect between what he knows and what he should know, and this place isn't giving him time to catch up.

Though it takes some getting used to, it's not the food or the people or waking up in an arena or learning to use a cell phone that gets to him. It's all the God damn space. It's everywhere and he can stretch his arms out, though one is considerably shorter, on both sides and touch nothing. The first few weeks there's too much going on that it doesn't sink in at first, but when it does, hell, it knocks him to his knees. There's so many people he'd known who would have loved all this space - Gilliam, Edgar, Nam, Tanya, Yona, Timmy, Grey - and none of them get to experience any of it.

He's overwhelmed by how much room there is, and how much of it is filled with nothing.

In hindsight, he'll realize that it's some latent development of trauma and stress that had him focusing on such a small detail in this strange new place, but it's almost too much to get a handle on. He hates it, and he hates himself for it. He's reminded that everything he worked for, all the people he was supposed to help and give a new life to don't get one and he does.

He doesn't deserve it, all this space. There's too much and he hasn't earned it yet.
